Document Discrepancies

Name variations: All US documents must match the name of your Ancestor as his or her name is shown on their Italian Birth Certificate.

Often individuals will argue that their family surname is spelled a certain way. Please keep in mind that your Ancestor’s Italian Birth Certificate is the “correct” document and any subsequent US documents, despite the “americanized” version or your family name, despite family trivia, folklore or assumption, are considered to be in error. ***The Italian document is correct and the US document is in error.***

For example:
Your Grandfather’s death certificate reads Pat Rossi. Your family has spelled your family name Rossi for the past fifty years. Your Grandfather’s name is spelled Pasquale Rosi on his Italian Birth Certificate. Your family name IS ROSI not ROSSI.

The Italian birth certificate of your Ancestor contains the correct spelling of your Ancestor’s first name and your families surname.

  • US documents with errors may require correction and or an Affidavit to Amend Records.
  • Most Italian Consulates require the correction of these errors as stated on their individual web sites.
  • Most Italian Consulates will accept the slight variation of (Pasquale to Pat; Antonio to Anthony), of FIRST NAMES for example.
  • However, it is not often that the spelling of the last name being varied is accepted without amendments/affidavits or a correction to the vital record.
  • Fees associated with the corrections and or amendments are determined on a case by case basis.
